Overview: Travel restrictions March 19th-April 17th
In accordance with the guidelines set out by the EU Commission, Sweden has implemented travel restrictions at its external border. Travel within the Schengen area remains unaffected.
Given the uncertainty regarding registering foreign nationals within the Swedish social security system, and keeping in mind our responsibility to minimize our impact on social services during this crisis, we recommend that every newcomer has comprehensive medical and accident insurances for at least 3 months upon arrival in Sweden. Non-EU citizen traveling from a non-EU country, New Residence permit
A non-EU citizen who holds a valid Swedish Work and/or Residence permit and intends to enter Sweden for the first time will not be permitted to enter until after April 17 (or at a later date if the travel restrictions are extended).
Non-EU citizen traveling from a non-EU country, valid Residence permit and living in Sweden
Any non-EU citizen currently residing in Sweden who holds a valid Swedish Work and/or Residence permit will be able to re-enter Sweden from a non-EU country for the purposes of returning home. The same applies if a non-EU citizen that is resident in Sweden, and has a valid permit, would travel to and from another EES country or Switzerland.
EU citizen traveling from an EES country or Switzerland to Sweden
An EU citizen traveling from another EES country or Switzerland to Sweden will be able to enter even during the travel restrictions.
EU citizen traveling from a non-EU country to Sweden
An EU citizen traveling from a non-EU country will be able to enter if they’re currently living in Sweden or another EU country.
We recommend that anyone traveling during this period carry proof of residence, e.g. employment contract, rental lease or a confirmation letter from the employer for example. For those that are already registered here in Sweden, you can download a copy of your civic registration from Skatteverket here. Do not forget to always bring your residence permit card when traveling outside of Sweden.
